WHAT IS CANCER?

Apart from my personal experience (at age 21 I had 4 tumors and our Bardas the german shepherd died from with cancer ) we were also shocked by warning statistics: 1 in 2 dogs get cancer during their lifetime and only 10% of it has genetic causes. WHAT is cancer?

Cancer is a complex disease and occurs when cells in the body begin to grow chaotically.  The mass of extra cells forms a growth or tumor. Cells in malignant tumors are abnormal and divide without control or order.

These cancer cells can invade and destroy the tissue around them. In a process called metastasis, cancerous cells break away from the organs on which they are growing and travel to other parts of the body, where they continue to grow.

Cells from cancerous ovaries, for example, commonly spread to the abdomen and nearby internal organs. Eventually, they travel throughout the body by invading the two systems of vessels that bathe and feed all of the body's organs; the bloodstream and lymph system.

Noble prize Winner Dr. Otto H Warburg has devoted his life to study the causes of cancer. What he found out is shocking - cancer cells fuelling their growth by swallowing up enormous amounts of glucose (blood sugar) and breaking it down without oxygen

In other words, cancer cells are dependent upon a constant supply of blood sugar (glucose) to stay alive and while normal cells can use ketones as an alternative fuel, cancer cells can’t.

HOW can we manage cancer?

There are two primary types of food-based fuel that our cells can use to produce energy. The first cellular fuel is glucose, which is commonly known as blood sugar. Glucose is a product of the starches and sugars (carbohydrates).

The second type of cellular fuel comes from fatty acids. When blood glucose is low, fatty acids can be broken down by the liver into products called ketone bodies or ketones. Ketones can be used by the mitochondria of most cells to produce energy.

This is where the ketogenic diet comes into the cancer-fighting picture

 

Most normal cells can use either glucose or ketone bodies as a fuel source. In contrast, most cancer cells can’t function without mitochondrial energy pathways, cancer cells can’t utilize oxygen or metabolize ketones, and this lack of exibility leaves them dependent on glycolysis and other less efficient forms of glucose-based energy production.

A cancer cell’s broken mitochondria, metabolic in exibility and dependence on glucose is why a ketogenic diet can have a suppressive effect on tumor growth. By lowering glucose and increasing ketone levels in the blood, the ketogenic diet exploits the Achilles heel of cancer cells by choking o glycolytic fuel flow.

So there you have it – there are great reasons to be in ketosis at least some of the time every week, not only for you but your dog too.
